HIV child

Right hears the info my sister phoned last night in tears both her and my nephew (aged4) have HIV we have known this this the boy was born, it was contracted from the boys father, the doctors say he has every chance to live to his twenties.
The problem is the school in there catchment area are refusing to accept Ryan as of the risk to other children
What should my sister do should she persue it or what options are avaliable to hiv sufferers.
Ryan is a typical 4 year old okay yes he gets ill alot more than the average child
But he wants to play with friends and ewnjoy his life

That is blatant discrimination and probably illegal,
your sister should report the school to her local education authority (sp)? every child deserves an education

I'm not sure the school have a right to refuse a child admission based on HIV status,I would advise a visit to a solicitor or citizens advice bureau. I would also tell her to get in touch directly with the Local Education Authority in her area to find out what options are available for her son's education.It may be that they insist he attend a special school for children with disabilities,even though HIV is not a disability.
I wish her luck as the LEA are not exactly easy to deal with in any area.

i read yesterday that a school refused to accept a kid because of his nut allergy on health and safety grounds .

and after the court case yesterday where the head was fined for safety breaches i think they might use that as a way to excuse this.

its very sad but kids play and get scrapes and cuts .

obvioiusly some parents will be worried about this.

its a difficult situation and not one that i can say will be easily remedied by fighting the council.perhaps getting in touch with an aids charity to see if theres a school that is more friendly towards kids with hiv in your area.

i hope that she gets things sorted out for the wee guy as its not his fault the situation hes in.

I would just like to say that as a parent myself I would have no issue with my son going to school with a child who was HIV positive,afterall the chances of catching the virus from a scraped knee etc are extremely small.The school is overreacting!!!

your right my nephew is aware of all the risks to others and what to adoid doing, we have not hidden his illness from him or any1 i had no pr oblem with him holding my son when he was just born
I am also Ryans guardian when my sister dies which i hate to say is not gonna be more than a year or two,

A school cant disriminate against a child because hes got HIV,

Children with HIV usually have a responsible teaching assistant looking after them.
I taught at a school where this happened.There were no problems at all.
The child in question was 8 when he contracted HIV & is now in his early 30's & well.Keep positive.

As if things aren't difficult enough for you all. I would contact the LEA and ask them for their explanations of a refusal in writing and then go to central government.

This is shocking, i too would not mind at all if my son was at school with children who had HIV. Personally if i was your sister i would not want my child to go to this school now.
