For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.You use the reference code that you have found at the right hand side of the matching entries, it will be a number from 1 to 12 (I think) and then a letter. This is the number that identifies the entry for the GRO only, not the one that will identify the register entry at the local register office.
Send off for the certificate using the info and reference you have and that will be fine.

If you are ordering from the GRO website, as long as you put 'YES' in the box that asks if the GRO reference is known, you don;t need to enter the exact dates. After all, that is the reason most of us buy certificates, to find out the exact date!
Sorry, I have no rellies in Scotland so can't help with Scotlands People, other than I know that it doesn't have may records after 1905. You have to apply directly to the Scottish version of the GRO.

Don't forget dollyann that you can order certificates from the registry office where the event was originally registered. For this you don't need the GRO reference, it will mean nothing to them. All indexes cover three months, so for an event (birth, marriage or death) registered in say February will be in the quarter ending March. The actual certificate will show the date. Don't forget also that family history questions are best posted under the genealogy section of HISTORY!
