She said "Ok, Father Christmas doesn't exist as a person, but the Christmas spirit does, and THAT is what exists in everyone at exactly the same time each year. If you believe in THAT, then Christmas will always be special."
She doesn't remember saying it, but I do, and it made perfect sense to me! (I was about 8, I think.)
Also, if you want to help your kids keep on believing for longer - rent The Polar Express DVD. We all love it here, and it makes Santa seem possible all over again after they've stopped believing. (Just ignore the fact that it's a Tom Hanks film!!!)

I stopped believing when I was 10 , but only because some nasty little boy in primary school told me !
That day I went home and sheepishly asked my mum if it was true, and she replied "Santa will always be real if you believe in him"
My nephew just stopped last christmas, he was 10 at the time. But we have sworn him to secrecy so he doesn't spoil it for his three little sisters.
Christmas just isn't the same after you stop believing.

Dad : "Son, we need to have a chat about the birds and the bees"
Son: "Ah no dad, not that!"
Dad: "What's wrong?"
Son (sobbing): "When i was 7 you told me about the tooth fairy, when i was 9 you told me about the Easter Bunny. When I was 11 I found out about Santa. I'm 13 now, and if you're about to tell me there's no such thing as sex I just don't want to know..."

I was crying my eyes out ... we still do santa... well what can I say I'm the biggest kid around....
