Looking for my dad........

Where do i begin?
I am 29 and have never seen my dad! You could say i was a affair so he was never talked about! All i know is his name JOHN HIGGS and that he lived in NEWPORT GWENT,WALES.
I did try the salvation army but as he's not on my birth cert. and didn't marry my mother they cann't help.
Money is tight too so the cheapest way possible.
Please can anyone help/advise me where to start.

hi just done a cursery search on 1837.com, does his middle name start with an M?

hi im currently tracing my family tree,you can do it for free at your library,ancestry.com can give you acces to telephone directories dating back years,i know theres no guarantee your dad will be at the same address but a grandparent may well be.its a start and its free

I don't know if he has a middle name i don't even know how old he is! The only things i know is his name where he was from and that he had connection with barton on humber area around 1978!
