Any ideas folks - husband wants a vicars & tarts party (Bridget Jones style, not in a weird way) but I don't feel comfortable asking friends to do that.
Looking for something a bit different?

what about the 1920,s flapper girls and charlston dresses and the men could come as charlie chaplin or just a 1920s suit or even a sixties party hippies or mini skirts
black and white. ladies can dress up and the men can wear either dinner jackets or T shirts.
I went to one once where you had to dress up as a charater beginning with a letter from the birthday girls name, for example E, M, I, L or Y

I was Maid Marion
My friend went to a 'P' party, the idea being that you have to dress up as something beginning with the letter 'P' - She went as Pat Butcher, one of her pals went as a pensioner, she even hired a wheel chair for maximum effect.

Maybe you could do something similar - pick a letter that suits you. :)
I Agree with Naomicorlett ,a black & white theme is good as it gives people a choice. They can dress elegantly if they wish or even cross dress , whatever takes their fancy.
