Is there a particular distinction between the two or is it more down to personal preference?

Which do you prefer.

Definitely Miss for me :)

im a miss never been married .
I also use Ms since getting divorced....no way do I want to be called Mrs anymore. I did use Ms for a while in the early 70's....it was a way for a woman to be seen as an individual......NOT an extention of a man.
I went back to Miss after my divorce and I kinda like it!
i was told that 'mrs' implied that you were the property of your husband.... and 'miss' implied you were property of your father.... and since i learned that i have been a 'ms'
