quitting my job

could i get some opinions on my letter of resignantion please?  It's only a part time job, but i've never quit a job before, so I'm not sure what I'm meant to say.

 Please accept this as my letter of resignation from my Thursday evening and Saturday job.
I have enjoyed working at xxxx's for the last 14 months but I am leaving so I can spend more time on my studies at Aberdeen University.
If acceptable I would like to finish working on the 23rd of December, four weeks from today.

I'm only required to give 1 weeks notice but they get most of their business at christmas, so I'm hoping that this will be ok.

That sounds fine - you are being specific about the date you will be finishing and are giving them more notice than they need. Also they know that you are not leaving because there is anything wrong with the job, so will be more likely to give you a good reference too.

It's really good.  If your employers treated you well and fairly that is.  You don't need to give them a reason and you also don't need to ask if it's acceptable, but your letter is friendly and you can probably expect a good reference from them in the future.

The letter is fine, and I think that working the extra notice should be acceptable if they are reasonable.  In any event, even if they were complete and utter wotsits, you shouldn't burn bridges as they may at any time in the future be approached for references.  Good luck.

It sounds as though you`ve enjoyed the job and they`ve been good employers, but it`s sad to say that there are  still some employers who will insist on you `clearing your desk and going now`.  They may feel a loss of trust and betrayal now that you no longer feel able to work for them.  Be careful you don`t do yourself out of 3 weeks wages by giving them a chance to replace you sooner.

Sorry to be so cynical but you never know for sure.

This is so considerate of you to even write this letter. Although there is the slight possibility that they will be offended and tell you to go home right away, I really doubt it because places like that are desparate for help around the holiday. The most important thing is that you have a good relationship with whoever you'll be giving the letter to.

I'm a cynic too, and wouldn't give them any more notice than you have to, just in case they 'let you go' after a week.
