can anyone tell me the best site for tracing ancestors from northern ireland

I don't know of any sites, but the 1911 census is online.

You are better looking at the sites for the various Family History Societies like:

http://www.nifhs.org/

http://www.ifhs.ie/

and then:
http://www.irelandroots.com/
and
http://www.irish-roots.ie/

The first two maintain their charity status by researching and recording their local records or MIs, the latter two I think are more commercial sites.
