Baby gasping for air and trouble breathing.

Just tryin to find out if anyone can shed some light on why our baby boy seems to gasp for air n have trouble breathing.
We have mentioned this to the midwife and the health visitor, but they kinda just say it'z normal n shrug it off.
Also, we have just started him on Gripe water, at 1 month old, as he really does have trouble burping n popping, well, he pops a lot but it doesn't seem to make him any more comfortable as he constantly has his knees up and strains to the point where he goez red n purple in the face!!!!
Please can someone help out.

At the very least phone NHS direct or an out of hours doctor and talk it over with them. You may well just a very anxious young mum and the health visitors might be right, but talk to someone NOW to get some advice. That is what they are there for. We can't help you with this. Good luck.

Seriously Toothfairy, if you are that concerned you should take him to A & E, they don't mind, and they wont think you are an over-anxious mam. I have only once taken one of mine because he was unwell (as opposed to having hurt themselves) and he was admitted over-night so I was really pleased that I followed my gut instinct. Little babies can get worse really quickly so please think carefully. Let us know how he gets on, x.

So are you saying most of the time he is fine, but the gasping comes around and after feeds?

IBelieve me, if he woz continuously gasping for air n in servere pain, I wouldn't b on here, I'd be down the Hospital!!!!
It iz periodic n when it happenz, is a couple of gasps, like when u see someone wake up in the horror movies,with a gasp.
His chest hasn't bin listened to recently, but will b tomorrow.

Yeah, most of the time he iz fine, itz when it does come around itz a horrible sound, then it goez n he'z pretty much back to normal, will let u know what happens n what is said, thank u very much guyz n girlz x

Hi, if it is colic here's what I was taught to do with mine when they were tiny.....

Lay the baby on your arm, face down, with their head towards the elbow, then raise you hand up onto the baby's belly and massage the stomach area with your finger tips [the baby should be slightly head down]. Burping and popping should follow :O}

One of mine used to almost stop breathing with the discomfort of colic.....and made me cry on a nightly basis it was so heartbreaking and frustrating to watch!

Hope your little one feels better soon....Oh and one other thing....feed in a more upright position [I used to feed mine sitting up straight], this stops air mixing with liquid in the stomach, causing the colic in the first place!
