I can't remember the name of the song this came from but it's irrelevant because what I was wondering was, are the chestnuts that are roasting on the fire what we would call conkers? Also has anyone ever actually done this, as in roasted and eaten them, which I assume is what is happening in the song?

No ... conkers are different.

These are sweet chestnuts.

Similar ... but not the same.

I've done them in an oven. Not on an open fire.

I like it at Christmas when you can buy little bags from guys in the street.
Sweet chestnuts are what we roast on our fire.

I'm not sure these are the same as conkers - the ones sold for roasting always seem to be imported from the USA, Spain or somewhere!

Sweet Chestnuts are rubbish as conkers.
