As a totally un-educated male - at least on cullinary matters - I have been thrown in at the deep end with my OH who is laid up in hospital.

She has asked me to dig out our old Cookworks sandwich maker and ordered a cheese and onion filling.

My only real worry is that I cannot remember if you 'butter' both sides of the bread or just the ouside. I put it as 'butter' as I only have 'Utterly Butterly' in the fridge.

I seem to recall you also cant use olive oil based spreads as they turn watery and make a soggy sarnie.

Any advice for a guy who just about manages to boil water without burning it!

Personally, I just butter the outsides to stop them sticking but I am sure if you want to butter both sides you can.
Ages since I used one but seem to remember the buttered side goes against the metal plates - but I also use butter inside otherwise its a bit dry.
Won't it be cold and limp by the time you get it to the hospital?
The sandwich might be too
I just butter the outsides.

mmmm, I want a toastie now.

Or you could take in the bread, cheese and onion and ask to borrow a set of these:

Thanks guys [and gals]

Did as you seemed to say - both sides - and as yet I haven't heard from the A&E at the hospital about a suspected poisoning case so I can assume all is well.
If they have a toaster in there (I've been offered toast quite often when in, often before bed or on a short stay, think the nurses have had a toaster) you could try the toaster pockets (reusable) you can get in pound/cheap shops and I imagine supermarkets. You can put it inside the pouch like a sandwich and it toasts it in a normal toaster without it getting all messy. Not sure if you could get access to a toaster that way and do it without the nurses getting all kinds of other requests from other patients but might be worth asking if say for a one off treat :)
Jenna,s idea is a great solution if they can toast the sandwich on the ward, they don't make the sandwich as good as the toastie maker, but they're quite good, and quick!.....I butter mine both sides by the way, although the instructions with my toastie make says just on the outside, that way the sandwich can be dry inside............good luck with it, hope all is well with your OH!
