I'm trying to trim down my lower half, but it's quite hard.
I figure if I eat wild rice instead of chips, rice, potatoes, pasta ...
And drink wine instead of ... fattening stuff ...
... then I should make progress.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Er...hate to break it to you JJ but just because wine is liquid does not make it non-fattening. The only truly non-fattening drink is water (or maybe black tea or coffee). Brown rice is good for dieting as it keeps you fuller but it is still a carb, albeit a no fat version. Pasta is just as much carb as rice. Sorry to disappoint you.
wild rice is good for you, as it isn't really rice - Canyon Ranch in the States recommend it - really tasty recipes

My problem is my legs, and butt. Over the winter, they've become a bit muscley (from skiing, running in the wet, etc).
Now the summer's here, I don't want to go around looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger in a swimsuit, so I'm trying to shed some size from my legs.
But I still run three or four times a week (maybe 20 miles a week), and workout at the gym two or three times a week, and the exercise is keeping the muscle that I'm trying to lose.
I don't want to stop exercising (the couch potato diet isn't for me).
And I'm not going to cut out alcohol (the miserable diet isn't for me, either).
So, I figure I need to change the food part of my diet.

I can`t see how cutting any kind of food out from your diet is going to slim your muscles. Normally, running lengthens the muscles in your legs and makes them more streamlined. Maybe you should keep up the running and see how it goes. Have you ever seen a marathon runner on the TV with heavy legs? I haven`t.
