Aberlour 10 year Whisky - is it good?

I had some fantastic advice on this site last year about Malts. Thought I'd ask again. I ended up buying a bottle of Jura Malt for hubby on the advice of the good answerbank folk. He loved it. Now I'm after a bottle for him for Christmas.

As I like to ring the changes I wondered what you all thought of Aberlour which seems to be on promotion at one or two places. Failing that, any recommendation in the same vein as the Jura would be great. He avoids the really hefty malts, but the Jura was honeyed I believe.

If he likes the Jura, a Scapa Flow, Highland Park or Lagavulin

Why not try an Irish malt for a change? Bushmills make some fine whiskeys at reasonable prices.

My two personal preferences are Old Pulteney and The Singleton. :)

Agree with Scapa and Highland Park. Also, the Glenmorangie Nectar D'or -finished in Sauternes casks, but a bit pricier than the other two.

Glenlivet is a Speyside malt. If you're not too keen on the strong-tasting smokey, peaty malt whiskys then I'd recommend it.

If you can get Aberlour 10 year old at a good discount, then go for it. Asda had it at £15.00 some months ago. Got two bottles for the brother-in-law. One at the time was for his birthday, and one is for Christmas. He knows his whiskies, and it's among the ones he likes best.

Laphroaig is very nice, go for the quarter cask, if the hubby liked Jura, he'll love this.

one of my favorites DT recommended Lagavulin which is probably the best single Islay malt, very peaty and smokey and very expensive and my favorite, but he'll love you if he gets a bottle of Laphroaig.

I like Laphroaig but it is quite powerful, a big smoky flavour with a hint of TCP, too much for some palates.

Wardlaw is right Laphroaigh is definitely an acquired taste. I've often thought it's the marmite of whisk(e)y people either love it or hate it. My own personal choice is Glen Morangie
