never iced a xmas cake before so doing marzipan then royal icing. It was suggested that i should also use apricot jam.

So where would that go...straight on the cake or between the marzipan and icing.

You use apricot jam to stick the marzipan onto the cake - so, spread the jam on the cake, then put the marzipan on top
Use the jam to stick the marzipan to the cake
I boil some jam in a little water, stirring. Cool and paint the cake.
I just warm the jam (without any lumps of apricot) and that makes it spread easier. ( I use a brush to coat the cake)

use a little vodka or white rum instead of water when you heat the jam
I would buy one ready iced:)
