I was in a huge Tesco's and the woman in front of me decided that she didnt want to take home all the plastic packaging/wrapping on all her fruit and veg and so while she was waiting in line she unwrapped it all - bags of carrots, apples, the lot! then when she got to the till she just handed the empty packaging with the barcode on to the cashier to scan, and said that she refuses to take home unecessary plastic etc. Well the cashiers face was a picture. She was trying to round up all this loose fruit and veg and it did hold up the queue for a bit.

So do you think 'good for her', for trying to do her bit and not take home all this endless wrapping or do you think she was being daft and a bit petty?

if you think about it what she did makes no sense, i can understand being green, but to stand in a queue and take all the food wrapping off seems perverse. Does she think the same about tins, after all you could hardly get the tin opener out and tip out the beans, it's still packaging after all, it's funny in a bizarre way...
tesco's recycling bin or the one she has at home, what difference does it make?
that she held up the queue to do it, that is bizarre...
Snags you always make me laugh.
Cucumbers, swedes etc often come shrink wrapped.

I do the same as this woman but do it by loading all the shopping back in to the trolley after it has been through the checkout then unwrap the stuff before I put it into my shopping bag
If she wants to do that it's about her feeling superior to the cashier and the other customers, it also defeats her desire to use less plastic. Tescos will simply dump it into landfill, she could have reused it at home. At the end of the day she purports to have high ideals but is too lazy to follow through.
in our local supermarket, admittedly don't shop there often, cucumbers, courgettes, peppers, mushrooms , tomatoes, are loose, some have packaging but really not that many now.
from way back there have been reports of all the main supermarkets not using so much plastic packaging which can only be a good thing, mind you it doesn't stop them from handing out carrier bags at every opportunity.
I think the supermarkets do go over the top with packaging but would never dream of doing something like that .I recycle packaging at home .
I find some packaging impossible with my arthritic fingers anyway. The queue would have probably been round the whole store by the time I had wrestled the shrink wrap off a cucumber :)
Silly woman .
shaney, don't they do non shrink wrapped cucumber...
I buy my eggs from a farm and take a hard plastic egg box to get them home. Must have had it 20 years and it still does the job.
People buy pre-packaged fruit and vegetables because there's a market for them, so her unwrapping the stuff hasn't furthered any green causes-she still bought them!

Don't think she's thought it through properly!
One thing that strikes me with respect to those of you who dispose of wrapping before leaving the store .

What about ' use by dates ' - how do you recall what they are later ?

I only mention ' use by ' dates because they are the only dates that i think you should pay attention to , with respect to some foods
Boo, don't you work in a store??
Bit daft really. Too much faffing around for my liking!
you know when fruit has gone, it usually smells, grows a fungus or looks like the birds have been at it..
Bazille, if it looks okay, smells okay and isn't slimey, it's before its use by date.
Yeah em,I do
