Can anyone recommend a really good Indian cookery book? Without wanting to sound like a pleb I'd like to be able to replicate really good Indian restaurant food.

Any by Madhur Jaffrey are good and easy to follow.

I would suggest that to replicate really good Indian food you would benefit from attending a cookery school.

That is probably true for any style of cooking, but they aren't cheap. It's a bit like sacrificing a holiday to cover the cost of the course.

If you want Indian Restaurant food, such as Jalfrezi, Madras, Tikka Massala, etc then go for Pat Chapman.

If you want authentic Indian food then Madhur Jaffrey is definitely the best.

If you want the last word in Indian restaurant cookery then you need The Curry Secret by Kris Dhillon. You might find it on ebay but it is discontinued. Failing that, Rick Stein`s India is a good substitute.

There are so many options in Indian cooking I think you need them all explaining to you. I've eaten at top notch highly rated Indian restaurants, and have had better more authentic food in a terraced house in Bradford.

I have two dozen books and have been on a great course run by my local indian restaurant.
But by far the best book is quite an old one. You can buy it second hand on Amazon from here.

Glad you have, I think it is a great book. I didn't want to rubbish others' suggestions, but I have some Madhur Jaffrey books and a Pat Chapman one, but this, in my opinion, is better than those. If I'm wrong, you have only lost 99p, but I don't think you will be disappointed. Please post in a few weeks to say how you have gone on.

I wouldnt even buy one - just go online and check out the various Indian cooking sites - they have some really great recipes - I found a super one for making Naan - turned out divinely delish!
