What sort of side accompanies shepherds pie, because chips or salad just seems wrong. I know that it is a meal in itself but for arguments sake...

Some good suggestions here, I think we'll go garden peas and coleslaw this time out. I like sprouts but never really eat them outside of the festive period. Thanks for all the answers I must think of them them next time. Braised red cabbage sounds interesting too.
Any green veg is excellent. Definitely no more potatoes in any shape or form.
No-one said french beans, so I will. French beans.
Coleslaw with Shepherd's Pie is not a combination I'd go for!

A seasonal green veg with a bit of bite would get my vote, there are some lovely romanesco around at the moment.....they have the added benefit of being a stunningly beautiful and mathematically fascinating vegetable!
Sweetcorn and garden peas for me.
We always have cabbage and bacon with shepherds pie. Shred cabbage and bring to the boil in salted water and then drain. Fry some bacon pieces in a largest flying pan for a few moments and then add the cabbage and keep stirring until all mixed. I often add a few drops of sesame oil to the mixture which the OH likes. Sometime I fry a chopped onion first before cooking the bacon bits. We like ours all well cooked but it depends on your taste
I always have peas and corn with mine, he has baked beans.
Dang Shoota! You must know how to cook :)
Can't understand why you'd have anything with it...surely it's a one pot meal where the veg (carrots, peas, sweetcorn, green beans, mushrooms etc) can all be incorporated into the pot along with mince and potato.

If i had it with anything, it would be sliced fresh tomatoes, cucumber and shredded iceberg lettuce, just to cut through the richness of the pie.
Not coleslaw, flob, that's cold - what you need is colourful veg alongside it, carrots, cabbage, more peas (that's what we had with our cottage pie at the pub the other night).
... and I agree with hammerman, we sometimes have a salad alongside our CP if we don't feel like cooked veg.
I wondered what you meant by "side" when I clicked on this question! - to me a side is an extra dish provided, like garlic bread, or bread and butter, you have it to the side of your main plate - it's not the veg you serve with the dish. Must be a question of terminology!
Baked beans, and I like it mix white pudding with the mince.
Never had white pudding, must have a try.
Sprouts? Euuwwww, some of you are mad
Cabbage, or salad, I'd go for
Sprouts are luscious.
Now I feel hungry for all this delicious food.
Definitely sweetcorn - and loads of it!
Sprouts are the work if the devil. At Christmas I put one on my plate, but I don't eat it (my children are weird, they love sprouts).
