I am off to Portugal for a family holiday next week and I was wondering what dishes ABers would recomend  for us to try.  Also does any one know which word would identify a dish being made from chicken as I can't eat pork unfortunately.

Well, chicken in Portuguese is galinha, so go for dishes that say this. Carne de porco is pork, so steer clear of this!

Good Portuguese dishes to try are:

caldeirada- a fish stew with as many as nine kinds of fish, cooked with onions and tomatoes

sopa de marisco- shellfish soup made with wine

bacalhao- dried cod

caldo verde- green soup made with finely shredded kale leaves in broth

Piri Piri, its quite hot spicy and lovely. Chicken piri piri is lovely.  I have been making it since going to Portugal 9 years ago. Schwartz make the spice here mmmmmmm :-) Enjoy your hols
If you are going to the algarve, try Steak Algarve Style, very tasty!

Frango is also used in restaurants as chicken, So if you can't see galinha, ask for Frango.

Portuguese food is gorgeous, so much tastier than Spanish, and the people are so much friendlier. Also you will find that most speak a little English, especially in holiday resorts, have a great time!

thank you very mucheveryone for your suggestions and helpful hints.  We aren't staying in a resort because we have been really lucky and a relative has let us stay in their villa, how fantastic is that?  I willtry to find out where in portugal it is.
hello hellywelly I have some portuguese friends in fairhaven mass. we have been to many fine restaurants and the food is very good .One of my faves, is a dish called CASSERLA or CACCIOLA it is a hearty beef soup with kale and other tasty veggies and wonderful spices. good luck dont forget the port wine of OPORTO. god bless

Portuguese food is lovely and on the Algarve the fish dishes are wonderful.  I love Portugal and really like the Portuguese people (who really like the English too - they are our oldest allies).

Have a wonderful time - any spare room in your suitcase - I am so envious!

Before you leave.......if you in the algarve...go to the old city of albufeira. in the toen centre on the right side is a restaurant which is slightly off the track (2nd street on the right of the square. Its called Oliviera....fantastic portuguese food, cheap and the locals eat there everyday. Their sardines are superb. Wine is only a euro and coffee is only 50 p.
