very cheap meals
27 Answers
please help! I need some ideas for (very) cheap meals to make for my son and I, I am really skint (as usual) and I can't look at macaroni cheese any more. I know it's cheaper to make meals from scratch and I dont want to feed us ready meals (junk) anyway.

Heat tin of toms with garlic and herbs and mix in some cream cheese, serve with pasta. Costs around a 1.50.
Jacket potatoes with just about anything (tuna and mixed bean) is cheap.
Cous Cous with roasted veg
Remember most of the essential foods veg etc are reasonably cheap and the cheap cuts of meat tend to be by far the tastiest, they just need longer cooking. Slap them on a low seting in the oven and forget about them for a couple of hours.
Its amazing what you can do with a tin of Campbells soup and other odds and ends.

hey myc, HLL loves what he calls 'made up meals'. Basically I take whatever is in the cupboard/fridge/freezer. Tell him what we have and we invent stuff. A couple of nights ago he had corn on the cob (frozen) pasta (cupboard) with tomatoes, mushroom and tuna. ie. tin of chopped toms, sliced mushrooms and tin of tuna, black pepper when he's not looking, and a pinch of salt Tip cooked pasta into sauce, stir, serve and add lots of grated cheese. Lovely
A bit of imagination and you can create anything.
PS he had pancakes with banana and choc sauce for pud!

OK now, did you see that creep flashpig on my thread last night? I was talking to johnny5 and he just jumped with this pile of filth and abuse, I reported them all but some are still there. It kinda freaked me out a bit, it was the middle of the night, just glad Johnny was there too, have you heard of him before?
Pasta and pesto is nice and cheap! And goes a very long way. I also live on very healthy bean chilli- fry onion and carrots and chilli (to taste) and add tin of toms/bruschetta/tomato puree squirt, and heat to make the sauce.Add tin of any beans you like- chick peas/mixed beans, borlotti, kidney beans, but rinse them first to get rid of any added sugar or salt. You can also cook some sausages- cut them into pieces and then cook in the oven, so the sides crisp up as well as the outside, and add. Beany sausagey stew- makes tons and is very filling. Have with bread/jacket potato/salad/houmous.... x
When I was really hard up, I used to buy a sack of potatoes - I've got 2 receipe books that are JUST receipes with potatoes (and other basic ingredients). Corned beef hash, colcanon, potato soup, hash browns, jacket spuds, bangers and mash, rosti, potato pancakes, the list is endless. I am now a master of 1001 ways to cook a potato!
I've got a chicken in the oven at the moment, so we're having roast chicken, mashed spuds, broccolli, carrots and gravy for tea. Then over the next couple of days I'll use the left over chicken in a variety of different ways. One of my sons favourites is chicken rissotto, then there's chicken a la king (in a white sauce with mushrooms, onions and red peppers if you like, served with rice), chicken curry, cold chicken with mashed potatoes with lots of milk and butter and chicken soup. I can get a chicken to last us quite a long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!
