Have a half-full bottle of advocaat in the cupboard which OH says should be thrown out as it will have gone off since it contains eggs. I thought that with the high alcohol content (17.5%) it wouldn't go off. There's no 'best before' or 'use by' date on it though it could be so old that putting such dates on wasn't necessary then! Would do you think?

How does it smell?
An unopened bottle will keep for quite a while.
However, once it's been opened .... well, take a chance if you want. I'd guess at a shelf life of a few months max, assuming it has been stored in a cool place.
You've really answered your own question, it contains eggs .... the fact that it's mixed with alcohol is irrelevant, the eggs will eventually curdle.

It smells fine, certainly doesn't smell 'off'. Don't want to risk even a small taste as just got over a stomach bug and don't want to risk it!

Thanks for the link, scorpiojo. Down the sink it goes!.
I feel your pain - we had to do the same with our last bottle. It smelt fine, but God knows how old it was .... *glug glug* ..... down the sink it went :(
I've never fancied Advocaat since, when I was a young lad, I asked my uncle what it was like :

"Like gargling with phlegm, lad"

Well Ive recently finished off a bottle we started in Christmas 2012, it lived in a cupboard. I'd never even considered that it might go off and as far as I was concerned it tasted as it should and I'm still alive to tell the tale. I'm pretty sure when I was a kid we had a bottle that was almost an heirloom that just provided a couple of snowballs once a year at Christmas.

Thanks for the varied and interesting responses. To ratty - I'm sure we also had a bottle that was kept over many years and only drunk on the odd occasion. Don't think I'll be buying anymore though!
I have an unopened bottle that I've had for about 1 1/2 years. I'm opening it tonight. The bottle says to consume within 6 months of opening.
The information on the back of the bottle says - discard 6 months after opening. Unopened bottles can be kept for years.
