I've just done a pretty ordinary, basic shop in Lidl and spent £18.70. I've added up the cost of those items on the Waitrose website (choosing their own brands as much as possible) - total cost £35.15. I normally shop in the latter as it's much closer but what can we all do to stop ourselves being ripped off?
If you prefer the surroundings in Waitrose then stay with them and pay the extra. If you'd prefer to save money, switch to Lidl. Have you checked the home delivery service; I don't suppose it's cheaper ?
Waitrose does not even try to compete in the 'Basic' supermarket league.
It has always catered for the more 'upmarket' shopper who does not shop by cheapest price. Rather like Marks & Spencer's food.
I've shopped at Lidl a couple of times and found the taste and quality of quite a lot of their foods not to my liking. I got some battered fish fillets from there once and not only were the skin and bones still in it, I was spiting out scales as well.
My parents shop there all the time and they like it.
Why is it one or the other? I use Lidl for some of the German stuff we used to buy over there and I always drop into Waitrose for their amazing reductions, they don't mess around with paltry 20%! Does anyone on here use Whole Foods, I think they're only in the London area, but we love to use them in the States, their soups are to die for.
