Seems like it is a regional choice. Down sarf we do not see
much Haddock in the chippie whereas it seems in Scotland all chippies have it amongst other things.
Perhaps tope(rock salmon) which is a member of the sharl family prefers warmer waters down here but even Rock seems to be dying out in the southern chippies as well. Shame. It is my favourite along with skate wings which are also a rarity now.
I used to buy frozen kilo bags of it on Newhaven quay about 20years ago.
It would seem the lack of fish diet is slowing me down in the Xwords these days. The little/hardest is a stinker today . :-)
I'm with lankeela - brought up in Lancashire we just used to get fish and chips. When I went to Brighton in 1964 and asked for fish and chips they asked what fish I wanted. I was floored as I hadn't a clue what we'd been eating in Lancs.
Morning Margo
I don't think Rock is known as Gurnet. That is a smaller ugly fish with scales whereas the tope, rock huss has a leathery type skin that you peel off with pliers.I use Gurnet for a bouillabase. It is bony though.
this is my mums favourite fish and we can get it here in hampshire and hertfordshire where mum lives .(but we can't get smoked haddock in our lidls but can up yorkshire where we visit family )
Good morning Retro - I wonder R what I am thinking about then. It was an off white fish with one bone in the middle, rock salmon I think but we called it something different.
