Never tried. I'd expect baking normal chips in an oven wouldn't crisp them. Even roast potatoes need fat.
As to what is done to oven chips, maybe the insides are reformed & soft, and the outside, oh I don't know, add oil maybe - not that I've ever felt them as greasy.
OG I've only ever tried oven chips recently and they aren't all that crispy to be honest, not as crispy as fried ones by a long way. I wonder if frozen fry chips were tossed in a little oil then baked how would they turn out. Maybe I should have put this question in the Science section lol
I would think frying chips would go a bit tough unless you sprayed them with that low fat oils you get. Oven chips have already got a coating of oil on them so you have to keep turning them.
Oven chips cook much better on a baking tray with holes in - Lakeland (and others) do them, the chips come out crispy. The tray can also be used for pizzas.
I would not disagree with that, but if you are trying to lose weight and get you fat intake down, oven chips are better for you. I make mine from scratch and use Frylight spray on them, not as nice but quite acceptable
Get good quality oven chips and deep fry them in small batches, works every time. McCain Home Fry's work well. Don't use the cheap supermarket chips as there are a lot of small bits in them that get overcooked.Use a temperature of 190 deg to fry them for just a few minutes, they are done when they start to float to the surface of the oil.
