Scroll down in this link to see a story about a UK traveller who became disruptive on a flight after consuming his own booze. How did he get it on board the plane?

duty free shop before boarding sandy.
Bought it departures I assume.
The last flight I was on I boarded with two bottles of Jameson's in my hand luggage.
You can buy it once you're airside, Sandy.
I like your style, ummmm. :-)

I'd forgotten about the shops after security.
Sadly, Douglas, they weren't for me.
So does that mean liquid limits only apply to outgoing flights or where there's a quick profit to be made
No...the liquid limits are until you've been through security. Once through you can buy liquids then.
So there couldn't possibly be a terrorist working airside
I would guess they know there are no bomb making liquids in departures.
They can't possibly know that there are no bomb making liquids airside, they are just presuming. The alcohol in the duty-free shops comes in from bonded warehouses and its impossible to know that a bottle hasn't been tampered with. Ditto for every other bottled liquid, such as water, orange juice, etc.

Add to that all the 1000's of people working airside, and you have a hole in security that you drive a bus through.

Its a remote possibility I will agree, that a terrorist outrage could happen airside, but airside is far from completely safe.
Nothing is safe but it's safer that side than the other.
Find that strange - I bought perfume in the duty free but still had to put it in a plastic bag and put it through separately as there was a limit in the number of mls you could carry on board? Have the rules changed?
No...you still have to put everything in a clear bag and anything over a 100mls (I think) will get confiscated. Once you're through the scanner though you can buy liquids in departures.
Thanks ummmm, wondered about that.
It's a pain. Carrying passports and tickets and a clear bag with your liquids (even lipstick is considered a liquid) then you have to take your coat off, cardi off, empty your pockets, take your scarf off and boots...yada....and then I still set the alarm off!!

They say the alarm is random but I'm not convinced. My OH and MIL never set it off. Always me. And I always panic like I'm a criminal!!
I've had two replacement hips (metal to metal) so buzz every time I go through the scanner. Worst experience was going into the USA after 9/11 when they were, understandably, jumpy.
I wouldn't mind that if I knew why I set it off. It's become a joke now, the amount of times I get stopped....for no reason. If I make it through I hi-5 the air :-)

The time I didn't set it off I left a lipstick in my makeup bag so my case was searched.
I also nearly always set it off - my understanding is it's my underwired bra.
