Why do we like hot foods which cause us pain?

My eyes are watering, and I'm wiping my sweaty forehead with the back of my hand.

I've had to slug down about half a bottle of Sauv Blanc to try to cool my mouth.

Why do we like doing this?

Serious question. I've heard some argument about endorphin release, like when you've done exercise.

Phoo, phoo ... that's me trying to suck in some cool air.

I think my tongue is on fire.

It's amazing what you can find in the Wall Street Journal!

>>>drink some milk

Don't be silly, Ummmm. It's JoggerJayne you're replying to. Giving her a choice between milk and Sauvignon Blanc is no choice at all!

Great article, Chris ... I like the "survived it" theory.

Milk is tempting, ummmm ... but Chris may be right ... and it might curdle with the wine, and then where would I be?
Now some Sichuanese food please, all the way up in Chengdu.....that's seriously hot and sooooo good, beer or white the wine the counter! (and rice)
I bought some of those Roulette Doritos today and there are hardly any hot ones in there. The hot ones aren`t even that hot.
Madras is about as hot as I can take. I once had a Vindaloo. A waste of money because all I could taste was heat, not flavour. The burning sensation in my mouth was only surpassed by the burning sensation in another part of my anatomy the following morning.

Jackdaw ... that is always the down side.
Vindaloo - I get curry mixes from an anglo indian guy and his Vindaloo was a lot milder than the Madras. He said that Vindaloo isn`t a traditionally hot curry - it became hot in the Uk somewhere in the 1960s when it was dished up to drunk blokes from the pub.

Lighting farts ... yeeeeah, gotta be a bloke thing.
The best remedy for hot curry is an oily food since the hot component of chilli is fat soluble. We don't all like chilli laden foods so knowing the remedy for over hot food (slightly hotter than a korma) is essential.
my youngest sister was the first to do that in our family, Jayne, then she can be quite manly......
Next time just buy it and flush it straight down the Loo!
Cut out the 'middle man' and save the pain. ( at both ends!)
bread is good at cooling the burning, or milk or yoghurt as ummmm says.
Milk is a natural antidote to capcaisin. In India, they always finish their meal with a little pot of plain yoghurt.
Proper use of spices gives you spice ,aroma, some heat and most of all flavour- panting for water/milk/air means a bad chef.
I just dipped the end of a bamboo skewer into a bottle of Dave's Insanity sauce and donked it on my tongue. OMG, the tinsiest little bit has burnt the mouth off me, it still hurts 15 minutes later.
"panting for water/milk/air means a bad chef" Not necessarily. In the Uk maybe but in Sri Lanka, all the curries are like that. The further south you go, the hotter the curry.
