Just watching a programme where a Pie & Mash shop was featured. My son walked in just when they were talking about the liquor so I missed what it's actually made of. Does anyone know?

And do you eat jellied eels? I've never tried them but my Nan used to love them.

The liquor is a savoury parsley sauce, sometimes made from the water in which the eels were cooked, but recipes vary. It's made from parsley mixed with butter, flour, water and some seasoning.

I had jellied eels years and years ago and quite liked them, very meaty and not very fishy from what I remember.
The liquor is a sort of runny parsley type sauce I think, never had it though.

Are eels bony?
They just have one bone down the middle, the meat just falls away from it
I love Enagi.....Sushi eels.....they aren't bony.

Not usually, ummm, esp if they are good fat ones. The liquor, don't know but it looked like a watercress sauce or herbal one.

They don't look appealing. Water snakes. Plus the thought of eating them from the Thames is off putting.

I am determined to try them though. And pie, mash and liquor...
I've never tried them but would love to as I think I would like them. However they seem to be available only in London

Jack - you can buy them in the supermarket. In Morrisons they are where you get the prawns.

Apparently it's a type of parsley sauce originally made with the water that the eels were cooked in.

I's probably like that then. I'm not a fan of pies though :-)
I had them in Blackpool on a drunken day/night there in my misspent youth. Followed by a few hours in Yates wine lodge. Those were the days...;)
Thank you ummmm. Will look out when I am next in. Don't suppose there's much call for them in NE England, though.

Eth - I tried my first whelk in Blackpool served by quite a dodgy looking bloke.
Ummm, in my experience ALL the blokes in Blackpool are dodgy looking ;)
You never seem to see winkles these days. Picking them out with a pin kept me occupied for hours.

Or Scottish :-)

Jack...I used to like them.
Used to have pie and mash weekly but hadn't had it for over 40 years - until I popped into one in Romford couple of months back. It was just as I remembered, though I guess the meat is of better quality than in the old days (when it was distinctly anaemic looking). Thought the waitress service was poor, until I realised you had to go to the counter and collect it yourself! It must have been the original fast food.

The shop featured today the were queuing down the road.
'Real' pie & mash liquor is made with the water that the eels have been stewed in. Pie & mash shops also serve stewed eels with mash and liquor. You can order pie & mash on line from one of the oldest and most famous Pie & Mash shops in London.

Incidentally, connoisseurs will know it's 'Pie Mash', not 'Pie & Mash'.

I haven't eaten it for years - but I love it. Vinegar is a must!

I like Jellied Eels too - with plenty of vinegar and white pepper.
