I found a live beetle in some salad stuff from a well known supermarket. I contacted my local Environmental Officer who came to my house, took a photo of said beast, informed supermarket who duly sent me a letter of apology plus 20 in vouchers. No yacht or villa on the med!
You won't get it back. As soon as you gave up the insect to the supplier, you gave up your proof. There is now no way you can win this as it your word against theirs. Unless I have got this wrong and they are requesting the insect from you! You should have gone to the environmental health. They would have had a quiet word with the company and have come up with some resolution. At the end of the day, as much as consumers are angry about things like this, mistakes do happen and there is nothing to prove that the item hasn't been contaminated on the way home. Sorry, but unless it's still sealed then you can do no more than take someone's word. This is to protect both the customer and supplier. Mistakes happen and you can't really expect suppliers to inspect every inch of salad. Can you honestly say that when you make a salad or food, that there has never been a stray hair or even a wee determined beestie hiding in the food. I know it's not the answer you want, but you can't expect food retailers to burn for human error. Sorry.

My point was that I didn't hear from the manufacturer, requesting the insect back, for nearly 3 weeks. The letter was quite abrupt with no apology for what had happened. I was annoyed that something that was a possible health hazzard seemed so low on their priority list.I got the impression that they didn't seem bothered. I do realize that things like this happen occaisionally and I WAS NOT OUT TO SUE AND MAKE BIG MONEY!! All businesses have to follow health and safety procedures, and if they do nothing when a mistake is pointed out what is the point in having them. What I should of asked is who do you contact to ensure that these policies are carried out and complaints dealt with efficiently!!
As it happens, I have now recieved a letter of apology from the manufacturer and a report of their findings - Which is all I wanted in the first place!!
karenfward - my post was in response to the answer from eternalteena, not yours :-) I'm definitely with you on making a complaint, and ensuring you get a response - which I'm glad to see you have. What I object to is some people taking things one step further and turning every little thing into a money making opportunity!!
