Are we losing some of our traditions, when last did one hear of an Easter Bonnet parade?

Shrove Tuesday, was not only Pancake Day, but also the day when children started playing marbles and whip and top.

As a teenager it was Good Friday when the rowing boats came into use on local lakes and rivers, and as a child the day my Mum walked to the fish market to purchase fresh fish for dinner.

We've already lost a lot AOG, mention this to anyone and they'll tell you that 'things change'. Now the word 'Easter' is left off the Easter eggs, and Nativity plays seem to be a thing of the past. What next?

There was always an Easter Bonnet parade in Luton (home of hats) but it died out years ago. Also orange rolling on Dunstable Downs for children -cancelled many years ago - elf and safety!

Well if this site is representative , Christianity or isanything to do with it is frowned on , so I don't think it matters to a lot of people

I remember going to church every Easter Sunday when I was a child. We were all given a cross made from rush

All my Grandchildren have had special school masses this week before breaking up , the little ones made Easter Bonnets and decorated Eggs, I have lovely Easter Cards on display here too.

One part of the family have gone away because it's my daughter's birthday - they are having an egg hunt after a stiff bracing walk (they're in the Highlands).


Some traditions have changed some haven't , a bit choppy on the water out here for rowing boat but they anglers look settled.

We have a palm cross on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter.

The only Easter bonnet parade I have seen was on the film Easter Parade and I have lived in the UK for 20+ years

Hmmmm....you may not have thought about the top for years, MrsO..... but isn't the whip still hanging behind the door?....;-)

Remember the 'Window Breakers' always a favourite of the boys, we would see how high we could make the jump up in the air, there was a certain amount of skill attached to it of course.

We would also push a drawing pin in the centre of the top and chalk coloured rings around it.

I don't ever remember an Easter parade but we did only have hot cross buns on Good Friday and absolutely everything was shut.
