My Dad always soaked his pods overnight in water, is this a good idea or not.

There’s no absolute need but I do the same with both peas and beans. It gets them hydrated and ready to sprout. If you do it though you MUST be ready to plant the next day as they will quickly rot.
I have soaked them previously, but do not bother now. I found that I could easily damage them in handling and just give them a good soaking after planting now.
