Prawns, bit of green cos lettuce, yucky salad cream/ ketchup mix supposed to be Rose Marie sauce and pepper or Tabasco if available. You asked for basic !! :-)
Simon Hopkinson offered up this recipe http://www.simonhopkinson.tv/recipe/9/prawn-cocktail.aspx

I'm pretty sure Nigel Slater also did a classic one.

It's always worth searching for perfect and your recipe and looking for the Guardian recipes.

Hope you find something to suit your taste.
Sorry, I missed the tried and tested bit. I am pretty sure I have prepared both the Hopkinson and Slater recipes, I did however tweak the dressing to my taste, just minor adjustments.
God I used to love this in the '70s, felt so groovy eating it.
Crisp lettuce at the bottom of a glass. Mix mayonnaise with tomato ketchup ... enough to make it pink. stir the prawns into sauce and place on lettuce in glass. Sprinkle with a bit of paprika. Add lemon slice over the side of the glass. Put glass on a side plate, add a small spoon. Some sliced, buttered brown bread on the plate.... and there you go. For pud make a black forest gateau and serv the whole meal with blue nun white wine!!
I loved Berni Inn. It seemed very posh when I was seventeen! I still love prawn cocktail.
When I make it now - I put some avocados in - one time I didn't have the avocados and used pineapple chunks. Guests went wild for them.
I've found the sweet and simple salad cream and ketchup make a good standby.
I was going to say get a prawn cocktail mix from Tesco, but I think MallyJ has the best answer. Quick, easy and tasty.
Maybe not the Blue Nun wine, though. Yeech :)
I have a Marguerite Patterson cookbook (Ninth impression 1978). She was teaching people to cook rations in the 2nd W.W.. Her recipe includes chopped onion and celery as well as Worcestshire Sauce.I will write it long hand if you want it. Can't C&P.
As everyone has said, lettuce base. Fill with mixture - good mayonnaise plus tomato ketchup and I slice a little onion very, very thinly and mix with it before stirring in the prawns and a grind of black pepper. Once all assembled add what you wish - a sliver of lemon, thin slice of tomato and definitely a good sprinkle of paprika.

I felt so sophisticated eating that in about 1973!
