I have decided my alcohol intake has been excessive recently and have decided to cut right back, in fact, I thought I would do "stoptober" and not drink alcohol for a full month, longer if I feel any benefit from it.
My problem is, I still want to socialise with friends and can only drink so much diet coke, so thought I would drink lager shandies. NOW I know I am still drinking alcohol, but in my mind, in very diluted quantities.
I got into a discussion with someone earlier who said, I am still having the alcohol equivalent of half a pint, for every pint of shandy. My argument is 1) they normally do less than half a pint and fill the rest with lemonade. 2) even if it was 50% lager and 50% lemonade, that would dilute the alcohol content to half the original quantity and thus, I am actually only having a quarter of an actual pint. So 4 pints of shandy would be equal to the alcohol of 1 pint?????
Your thoughts please.

But pebbles are physical objects, alcohol is a chemical. I am not saying I am right, I am just trying to get it straight in my head. That by diluting a chemical, lessens its strength.( I am sure there are weird chemicals out there that increase potency through dilution. )
if you drink half a pint of lager or half a pint of lager mixed with half a pint of lemonade, you will still have consumed half a pint of lager. Look at it this way. You have two glasses in front of you. One has got half a pint of lager in and the other one has got half a pint of lemonade. You drink the half a pint of lager. How much alcohol have you had to drink? answer: half a pint of lager. Next you drink the half a pint of lemonade. Now how much alcohol have you had to drink? answer: still half a pint of lager.
If you dilute the alcohol with lemonade, you will have reduced the volume of alcohol.
Either drink alcohol or don't drink alcohol. Stop messing about.

Tilly2 are you saying drinking shandy is tantamount to "messing about"???
You've reduced the percentage of alcohol in the drink- not the volume.
You will have reduced the amount of alcohol as a percentage of the volume but if you drink it all you've still drunk the same amount of alcohol. Think of it as sugar, 3 tsps of sugar in 1/2 litre of water will have a higher percentage sugar content per cc than 3 tsps in a litre of water. Whichever you drink you will still have consumed 3 tsps of sugar.
Yes, jOnbOy, I am.

I think she means stop acting the pRat and grow up, but being she's a true lady, she can't get herself to say it....Me, on the other hand.......
So you drink 8 pints some nights? Ametuer, lol.
I havnt had a drink for 2 months now and it feels good. As others have said, knock it on the head altogether for a bit and see how you feel.
Pixie - I believe the percentage and the volume are one and the same (ABV)
I agree with Tilly..you are only seeking permission to continue drinking..do or don't up to you..my tipple is lime and soda too ! and in a pub your friends may put pressure on you to have a "proper" drink...
You can always do ''Stoptober'' and if you want to drink again do ''Cant remember November''
Nailit you're a good boy ! lol xx

Tilly2......are you being flippant with my use of 00? :-))).
You should really have posted the question in Science and then you'd have got those kind of answers rather than ones about your personal drinking. I can see it's an interesting topic (the dilution bit).
