The other day I sat eating a very healthy salad, whilst my husband sat there tuckung into burgers I had made for him.

They were sweet chilli burgers from Aldi served in large soft buns with lettuce, onion, cucumber, mayonnaise, melted mature cheddar and ketchup.

I seldom eat burgers, especially in bread rolls, as they're simply not my food of choice, but on this occasion I had a serious case of food envy. His Lordship says they were the best burgers he's ever had.

It got me thinking.... What constitutes the perfect burger?

I think that's why most burger places use cheese slices because the flavour is mild. When I stuff a burger with cheese I go for a really mild cheddar or mozzarella.
I just use a white sauce for lasagne with parmesan on the top.
I reckon it's what isn't put in a burger that defines how far up the perfection scale it is. Ones with lettuce, cucumber, sesame seeds, for example, won't get off the bottom rung. All it really needs is a crusty rustic bun, good quality meat burger, and a selection of whatever one feels like at the time. Fried onion is nice, as is tomato. Cheese maybe, or a good mustard. But they're all optional extras.

Not a crusty bun, OG, surely?
Crusty is always best, unless one no longer has one's own teeth.
has to have shredded lettuce..mayo...dill pickle...raw onion..cheese and relish on a lightly toasted bun that will not fall apart....

The best way to eat a burger is to use a sharp knife and cut it in half or better still quarters.
Whilst I was in the US, I had a jerked pork burger. It was to die for. I keep meaning to recreate the recipe here.

I'm not sure I could stomach a burger stateside - their portions are eye-watering!

I was in Boston in May and it was all seafood and steaks.
Lorne sausage on buttered bread topped with grated cheddar and a splash of HP sauce.
See off any pretender.
Doug, my sons are rather to partial to that for a lunch at the weekends.
I don't grate the cheese tho, just thin slices.
Also in Javea/Xabia if I can manage it. :-)

I usually end up grating my fingernails into the cheese, so have stopped lol

Used to finish work at 11pm on a Sunday night and would stop off at BK drive-through for a cheeseburgers, guilty pleasure at that time of night :-)
