How do you wash soft fruit like raspberries, blackberries, blueberries etc? Do you just rinse under water? How do you wash fruit in general that you'd normally eat with skin like apples, pears etc., and veg for that matter.

Given the recent fears over contaminated frozen veg and watching Alice Beer earlier on This Morning advising everyone to wash all fruit and veg before use it got me thinking that maybe water isn't enough.

Someone once told me that they wash berries in a bicarb and water solution.

Very true bainbrig, we’re a laughing stock as we don’t wash our meats and poultry either before prepping, actually many say we don’t know how to season our foods either but when I say we I mean they as I’ve taught myself hygiene and don’t rely on cold water to remove wax or oil based pesticides as a little googling by some uneducated in hygiene and science will certainly telly you that either boiling water or an antibacterial washing liquid would be ideal on both counts.
Actually, you are not supposed to wash poultry...or chicken at least.

I don't wash any meat or poultry. And I use disposable food gloves when handling chicken.
That’s more down to incompetence by the average cook which is why the government after wringing their hands in record number of salmonella poisoning had to show adverts where people can be showed splashing salmonella everywhere and touching and infecting everything.

I can’t remember seeing those adverts in the West Indies, Africa,l or South American which tells me a lot.
I would never ever eat unwashed fruit. From the pesticides to the pickers and on and on, bet there is plenty of faecal matter on everything. Yugh. I peel most fruit also. I also wash/wipe with a damp kitchen towel poultry, meat (except mince which would be a bit difficult, but always make sure it is well done) before preparation. Maybe doesn't get rid of all bacteria, but makes me feel better and have found chicken sh.. plenty of times. Actually I wipe eggs with a damp cloth before storing in the fridge too.
I always was my meat and veg when taking a shower.

I'm just stunned that someone would wash food in washing up liquid.

Personally I’m stunned at how we in the West look at other nations as animals but then do worse behind closed doors.
What on earth are you talking at Minkyme? Washing food in washing up liquid is weird and nothing to do with hygiene.
Look it sounds weird but after you wash your fruit or veg briefly then rinse off you’re left other clean untainted food high doesn’t taste of washing liquid if that’s the fear.
I find a few good passes of sagebrush smudge does wonders for cleaning all sorts of things, btw. Did you choose your name after the well known brand of cleaning products
I did a Sirloin last week on a 60° wash (short spin), wasn't bad but think I'll go back to the griddle pan.
Washing fruit and vegetables in soap is not a good idea.

I always wash fruit and veg - under cold running water.
And boil in the bag dinners, although I find a microwave works better.


Minky...did you read my link...the one with SCIENTIFIC results. Don't wash your veg with something you wouldn't eat.
