which supermarket do you use??

i normally allways go to sainsburys..but last month i decided i would give tesco a whirl..home delivery of course..just basic dry goods and cleaning things..well the cost was more or less the same..except i didnt get my sainsbury points and i had to pay delivery as sainsbury is free.midweek..well things like their own brand fabric conditioner are really thin and runny so i have used twice as much..and the quality of some things were poor...so i havnt saved anything as i have just had to top up at sainsbury to last me till the end of the month...come back sainsburys i am sorry for being a traitor!!

i used to use asda delivery and got sick of lateness and too many substitutes and awful fruit and veg, i use tesco now and cannot fault them, they are always well in time, well packed, fresh and minimal substitues.

Hi mullein - I love Sainsbury's but because you need a car to get to my nearest one I don't go as often as I'd like. We had one of those small Tescos open in our area - I can't see why everyone raves about their own brand &, needless to say, being a convenience store it's not cheap either. That just leaves me with the Co Op & Iceland. I've never done home delivery I prefer to look round - not that I enjoy food shopping!!

i hate food shopping as well...i get the dry things delivered and go and pick ..fruit. veg.. meat ..dairy etc...i know i have used a months supply of fabric conditioner in the last two weeks..its that thin i put loads in..anyway i am off tesco now ..my daughter uses tesco but she has a family so i guess she looks for bargains..i like watching the delivery man struggle up our drive with all my heavy shopping..that appeals to my wicked sense of humour..and it is heavy.. a months supply of pop ..cider, washing powder i have 3 large boxes of that..then all the other heavy things...

Here's a quick summary of my opinions:

Aldi & Lidl: Rubbish for food but worth watching for their weekly non-food specials. (Everyone tells me how smart my leather trainers are. The cost? �5.99 from Lidl!).

Asda: The cheapest store for everyday food & household basics. The cafes are rubbish with unappealing, dried-up food. Some really good value wines.

Tesco: Rivals Asda on many prices. Cafes are basic but acceptable - although they're better in those Tesco Extra branches which have franchised out their cafes to Eurest. Wines are good but they can't match Asda for quality at the cheaper end of the price range.

Morrison: Not as cheap as Asda or Tesco but worth visting for the current 2-for-1 offers. The fresh fish counter is usually better than Asda and Tesco. A great range of wines and by far the best range of continental beers in any supermarket. The cafes are far better than anything Asda or Tesco have to offer, with all food cooked to order.

Sainsbury: Generally more expensive than most of their rivals but with consistently high quality throughout (including wines & beers). Cafes are franchised out to Eurest and of a much higher quality than their rivals (except Morrison) because all food is cooked to order.

Waitrose: The creme-de-la-creme. Can be pricey for some items (but by no means all). Outstanding 'special occasion' wines. Chilled 'ready meals' are generally of a much higher quality than in most other stores. (Matched only by M&S). Definitely the best supermarket for cheese. (Most supermarkets refuse to stock cheeses made from unpasteurised milk. Waitrose don't!).

I'm a Sainsbury's girl - love their organic fruit and veg range (getting better all the time) and I think the choice is quite good. Where I live, if you haven't got a car your choices are Sainsbury's or Kwik Save (which is a little cheaper for brand name staples, but the choice is poo)

Asda only because our Sainsburys is so cold you go brain dead. I know the temperature has to be low around the chillers but this is a bit much.

buenchico..i dont think we have a waitrose here i think they are more in the east and south of the country..i shall stick to sainsburys in future...

All the big suoermarkets her are out of town so with no car we shop at our local Somerfields We have a huge market where I buy my meat,fruit and veg.Much cheaper than the supermarket and it's all local stuff. Once a month ,if I can catch him,my son takes me Asda for bits and pieces and then we go to Lidl(sorry Chis) for stuff we are used to eating from Germany.Mr.S .-would go into decline without his bratwurst,pumpernickel and Black Forest ham !!
You have to pick and choose at Lidl..I find their washing powder is cheap and as good as the leading brands.
Their bottled water is 25p a bottle and the same as any expensive brand.I know..plenty of water in the tap..but it is so chalky here it makes me gag !!
We sometimes push the boat out and go to M&S.

shaneystar we'll have to get Vinny to take us all shopping on the BiddyBus - don't you hate not having a car sometimes? Mind you my sister's just had a �650 bill for her mot so it's not all easy.
I love M&S food too but it means going into town & I think (mullein you're gonna love this!) you have to be over a certain age to afford to shop in there judging by ours!

robina...you will have to go on that web site mad about bargains and download some money off vouchers...i used to go into m&s occasionally when i worked in town..but now because i go to bham i rarely go to m&s...i hate ques and the m&s in town by me the food hall is dreadfull people dawdling around and allways ques...and yes they are of a certain age!! when i go to sainsburys i go at 08.00 in a morning before people get in their allthough their will be the odd one dawdling around at that hour...i get heavy stuff delivered as its easier..and just do it once a month..

Well robinia it would be no going shopping with Vinny on the Biddy Bus....because all he would do is look round for special offers on Becks and fishnets.If there was a Bogoff on Becks I dread to think what sort of state he would be in !
Our Marks is like that mullien.. people dithering around ..but for the occasional treat they do have some nice stuff.Mind you I couldn't afford to shop there all the time.

shaneystar ...we lived in germany once when mr m was in the raf..we were their 3 years...mr m and daughter still like bratwurst ...i dont like much meat so they dont tempt me...i only used to pick up bits in m&s i wouldnt do a shop their for the week or month..they had a wine i liked once it had blackberry in it..but i went once and couldnt find it...perhaps it was a one off..all the m&s food halls i have been in are cramped and full of people..so i dont find it pleasant..i dont like being pushed and trampled..i like space...also supermarkets bring out the worst habits in people ..some see it as a social gathering..!! they are the ones blocking the aisles..

I hate food shopping, but fortunately my husband doesn't mind at all! He enjoys looking for nice fresh fish, cuts of meat & special wines. (He enjoys cooking too - which I also find boring - although I make a mean Sunday roast)!

Anyway, he shops in Sainsbury's, but if we had a Waitrose nearby, he would shop there too. You can't Marks & sparks either, but don't have one near us -besides Robinia's right, you have to be over a certain age to be able to afford shopping there all the time!
