Save My Fig Tree

We have a small (2 foot high) fig tree on our balcony. It was given to us in August and has actually given small, sweet fruits. We repotted it when it was given to us in August and it has thrived until recently. After the recent southerly gales, it has started to look a bit poorly and the leaves are going black at the edges. Is this just wind damage or is it crying out for fig tree food?

We have a fig tree in the garden, it’s probably twelve foot tall and twenty years old. They’re deciduous trees so lose their leaves in autumn, ours is completely bare now. Perhaps yours is just responding to the season.

How well-drained are those pots? A bit of googling suggests that root rot (which occurs when the roots are constantly damp) can be the cause of leaves going black.

All fig trees lose their leaves in autumn, some earlier than others. In the UK fig trees are among the first to prepare for winter.

A tomato feed, every couple of weeks throughout the growing season should be fine.

I agree with Buenchico about root rot. Tip it out of the pot and check the roots

Thanks all. If it is a root problem, what do you advise I do to combat it Buenchico and Woofgang?

trim off any roots that look rotten or otherwise dead. If the rootball is soaking then roll it in old newspaper and squeeze gently to get as much water out as you can. Repot in a well drained compost wit no added water. stand it where it won't get much (any) rain and put the pot on feet to allow drainage and pray.
