Apple Weight.

Hi all
I have a recipe for apple crumble that states it needs "700 grams of apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped". Is this weight the weight of the apples before peeling and coring or is it the weight after they've been peeled and cored?
I know it may seem a daft and simple question but I want to get it right!
Thank you.

TBH....it's an apple crumble....it doesn't matter that much.
In this case I think it's 700g of whole apples, to be cored and peeled etc. If it said 700g of cored etc apple you'd weigh the apple bits after preparing.
That's my usual interpretation of general recipes anyway.
I agree with Jo.
Yes net weight when apples have been prepped
Eh? TonyV. You seem to say the opposite of the others. Is it the gross weight or net weight?
700 grams of apples peeled etc = gross weight
700 grams of peeled etc apples = net weight.
Tam l meant weight after all the prep was done i.e. Peeling and coring, so just the weight of the apples you are using.
the 700 grams needs to be: peeled, cored and roughly chopped
If you read OP answer is in the question.
Purchase (or gather) 700 GMs of Apples.

Custard or cream and what time you serving ? :-)
Lynne I was waiting for invite aswell.
I just throw in enough prepped apples to fill the baking tin.
^^^pasta....as in my answer at 14.49.....
Frankly for a crumble it's irrelevant - just use the amount of apples you need to fill your dish while leaving room for the crumble obvs.

Well I'm still scratching my head here. I dont know if it's me but some of the answers look ambiguous. I can't make out from Spathiphyllums answer if the 700g is before or after prepping. Dannyk's answer looks like the same statement on both lines to me with the words transposed. Also if the answer is in the question as TonyV says, why are you of different opinions on the matter?
700g of peeled and cored apples weighs around 400 to 450 grams. Given that the sugar that the apples are cooked in plus the sugar in the crumble are fixed amounts, I'd really like a portion of the crumble to have the sweetness intended by the recipe writer. Surely the weight of the apples would make a difference here?
I really think you are over thinking this a bit. As for the sugar bein a fixed amount...that is also flexible. Recipes are often guides, and erring a bit one way or the other will not make much difference. There's always variables like the size of the tin, etc.
If it were me doing it, I'd use 700g, already peeled and chopped. Too much is better than too little...you don't have to scrimp with a crumble!

Many thanks pastafreak. I'll do as you suggest. Thank you all for your replies which have allowed me to see that different interpretations of the recipe are possible. I just wish the recipe (from a Panasonic combi oven cookbook) was a little clearer. Thank you all again.
I hope it turns out well...I'll bring some cream ;)
