Is There A Pheasant Shortage?

My usual supplier is out of stock. Found others that advertise that they have it in stock, place an order - not available.

I know we are only 7 days in to the season but I can't even place advance orders.

Do you know something I don't?

There was a grouse shortage at Balmoral, no shooting for ER this year. Maybe the same for pheasants

I hadn't noticed there were any less arpund here. They were shooting all day sat and again this sat. The birds seem quite juvenile tho and not as big as this time last year.

Tasted pheasant once and didn't like it at all so any shortage won't affect me.

There seem to be quite a lot of jaywalking ones around here. Daft birds. They wait until you are really close then run across the road, in front of the car.

This brings back sad memories of the time I was asked as a favour to a gamekeeper friend to do some beating,
36 hooray henries with untrained dogs,never again it was a slaughter no sport as far as I could see.
Chinless wonders couldn’t keep their dogs under control,they were only there for the drink

Probably the wet summer. Pheasants are ground dwellers and many nests will have been waterlogged.

But the number of Pheasants available does vary a LOT from year to year ! Some years are too dry, too hot or too cold ! There are NEVER enough available for all who want one (or Two) . Demand always exceeds supply ! I think it is intentional to keep the price up !

Although the season starts on the 1st of October most pheasant shoots don't get going until the middle of the month or later and some even waiting until the beginning of November.
Although it is legal to shoot them now, most shooting at this time of year is at Partridge but the keeper may say in his pre-shoot briefing that if a high fully feathered bird (last years) comes over the line it may be shot.

More than 90% of Pheasants are farmed now ! VERY few wild ones left! But the weather does effect the supply ! They don't like it too hot too cold,too wet or too dry ! Fussy *** ! Plus UK pheasents can be sold for MUCH more if exported ! So most suppliers send most of their stock overseas !

Now't wrong with getting one's meat from the wild. Less keen on it being viewed as an entertaining sport though. Anyway, I'm not a pheasant plucker.
