Americano is generally just a black coffee, which is what i have, but they do ask you if you want milk.......
It's the fancy name for black coffee, HC.

Took me ages to learn the different types and now there is another one called doppio or smething like that.
Thanks, both. Oh yes, I remember when 'frothy coffee' in glass cups and saucers (often smokey grey glass but could be any colour) was fashionable in the cafés in my youth. I was never keen.
You keep your tea if you like it, Clarion, I have been persuaded to try both black and green teas with and without milk and/or sugar - dislike them all and in every way. Perhaps a bit odd: I don't mind mildly coffee flavoured cake and similarly even a bit stronger ice cream, and I truly like the smell of beans roasting, the smell of coffee brewing is not at all bad. Alcoholic drinks other than beer are fine in moderation but there are astringent and/or sour wines (most of those I recall tasting are French) that I find unpalatable. Simply put, I'll drink what I am OK with, the rest I won't accept when offered.
I think it's just a black coffee, HC, but I'm not sure. I agree, I wish they wouldn't Ponce around with these fancy names.
Mostly freshly ground beans, sometimes preground, or even instant.
More than I ought but when one wants a coffee one either pays or goes without.
For a good mug of coffee I don't begrudge a couple of quid.
£1.50 p for just ordinary instant coffee with milk. I wouldn't step through the door of Starbucks or Costa. I recall a cup of canteen coffee in the late 60s was 3d and tea was 2 1/2d.
If ever i do get a thirst while out and about, i usually opt for a cold drink. I totally begrudge paying stupid amounts for a cuppa - be it coffee or tea.
If it’s over £2.50 count me out.
As someone who only drinks coffee, never tea, I would willingly pay £3 for a good cup of tasty strong coffee. Instant coffee tends to be very weak, or bitter, and I would rather go without one, and have a glass of milk, than have a weak coffee, especially since I take it without sugar. I once had a cup of instant coffee which was absolutely like just hot water, my husband said I was too fussy, till he tried it, then agreed it was foul. Good coffee or none at all.
