Whole. No point in cutting it. Never diagonal though, if I'm cutting it for someone else. But as APG points out both methods are cutting in in half.

My toaster is fit for small slices only so i don't cut mine. even when i had a larger toaster i still left the slices whole. They don't taste any different whether they are cut diagonally or straight across the middle. I have however discovered that if i butter it from curved end to square end, it tastes differently than if i do it the other way. Try it...........
