Got A Problem With My Latest Rescue, Little Jay.

He's been difficult regards feeding since I've had him. I won't bore you with all the details just to say I've tried every dog food going. After two days without him eating, I phoned his Rescue who advised grating cheese on top of his wet food, so I did. He loved it and cleaned the dish. After a couple of days he started picking the cheese off the top and leaving the food. So I the began mixing a bit of grated cheese in with his meal and then sprinkling some on top as well. He ate it all and now, if every dish is not like that he won't eat it. He's a small dog and although a bit of cheese occasionally is OK I know this much isn't good for him. I do keep the amount to the minimum he will accept.
BTW, most anything off my plate he will eat!
Other than letting him starve for days on end until he eats, has anyone a better solution? I have never ever had a problem with any of my 7seven rescue dogs when it came to food. Help woof woof.

Have you tried boiled rice and chicken? Mix some tinned wet food in it. He could have been fed table scraps. He could also be testing you. You could put a tiny bit of your meal in with his and have you tried feeding him when you eat?

I agree. Ive never met a dog that wont eat chicken, its nice and light too.

Thanks woof and margie. I suppose I could, yes he does like chicken which is the meat I eat 99% of the time.
I'd have to get him something cheaper than the M&S or Waitrose breasts that I have though as he'd wolf a whole one in a mouthful, almost.
He'd need supplements of some sort with chicken and veg wouldn't he?

If you have a morrisons near you. you can buy a whole chicken, already cooked and ready to eat for only £4.75p. ,I usually buy one of those once a fortnight and it lasts me several days.

Try putting him on a raw diet, no chemicals just good fresh raw meat, if he doesnt take to it straight away, just cook it very lightly to start, or you could try feeding it frozen, our hounds love it frozen.

My dog eats chicken all the time lb as he has a sensitive stomach and a lot of stuff can give him the runs. I buy Asda's own cooked chicken pieces or a brand Sainsbury's sell by, I think by A.J. James, both reasonably priced. I also buy Asda frozen chicken strips (ready cooked) which I just defrost for a few minutes. He eats the chicken on its own. As a change twice a week he has Lily's Kitchen dog food which is quite expensive, but no additives. I get him the Sunday Lunch one or Chicken and Turkey Casserole. He loves his diet! If Jay likes chicken, you are on a winner.

If he likes veg. I don't see why you can't mix it in with the chicken.

We used to have an incredible fussy lab who lived his entire life on meat veg and pasta we would just get yellow sticker meat or chicken breast boil or roast cooked veg and pasta and a bit of broth he loved it

RATTER thank you, you've reminded me that's what I used to feed my last dog, frozen food. And my favourite supplier brings it over for free. Can you remind me what meat it is please?
I will give him chicken also, and no I don't have a Morrisons near me. I need someone who delivers but that should be easy enough to arrange. I'll look at Asda's chicken strips Margie thanks. Regarding hard food I've got the best part of a bag of highly rated 5* complete I bought him in the early days which he liked but he won't go near it now. He's not really food driven. Kind people offer him treats and more often than not he refuses. Funny little chap.
So I have about 20 odd packs of food he won't eat plus the hard stuff to drop of at the nearest Rescue asap.

Margie I meant to say he turned his nose up at Lily's Kitchen which was one of the first foods I bought him. I don't buy rubbish. I shall order lots of chicken and he will have cheese only as a top treat in future.
Off to bed I'm exhausted after playing tug-a-rope to try and tire Jay out as we had only a short walk today as it was pouring with rain here.

Hi guys, still having probs with feeding Jay. He's eating chicken and sausages and a few green beans and peas and that's it. Won't eat anything that would fill it out and fill him up such as rice, pasta, potatoes (even chips). Carrots he spits out. His hard complete food he eats a few pieces once in a blue moon. Cheese he'd eat all day so I give him a small amount weekly. Four different packets of treats, each with one removed which he wouldn't eat grrrhh! I'm concerned that what he is eating isn't enough for him health.
Your opinions please, again.
Oh and not interested in the raw even when cooked.

I would imagine he is used to table scraps. Have you asked the rescue what they fed him. Can you add a little bit of rice, dog food and biscuit mixed with what you eat?

I had a dog who was a fussy eater and I found one thing that he would eat and that was Butcher's Tripe.Might be worth a try for your dog.

Tesco often sell 3 fresh chicken for a tenner, ideal if you have room in your freezer. Otherwise check out Aldi, Lidl, Iceland for their whole chickens and portions, fresh and frozen. Iceland is currently selling 800g boneless thigh fillets for £3
Would vegan cheese be any better for your dog? Not cheap but could help.
