I opened a packet of cod it was in date by two days but it really did smell bad. Is this normal I don't normally eat cod.

It shouldn't smell bad when it has been removed from the packaging and left for 15 minutes or so. In fact some of the prepacked fish I buy has a sticky label on telling me it might smell when first opening.

I find some fish have a really 'fishy fish' smell to it & others don't. I tend to wash my fish in cold running water, put it in a dish & salt it on top, turn it over & sprinkle salt there too, if it's really smelly, I also add a few splashes of malt vinegar. Let it sit for 20-30 mins, wash again in cold water, rinse, dry with paper towel if you wish and viola! it's perfect......no fishy fish smell
