Smelly Fish

I opened a packet of cod it was in date by two days but it really did smell bad. Is this normal I don't normally eat cod.

Fresh fish do not smell. Take it back to where you purchased it.

It was from Tesco it was ever so smelly there were a lot of juices in the packet also I had to drain it in my bin it stank so much I had to take the bin out only 15 minutes later. I was worried a fox would try to get in my bin for the juices.

I find a lot of fish and meat smells bad when first opened especially if it is vacuumed packed or in rigid air tight plastic.
It shouldn't smell bad when it has been removed from the packaging and left for 15 minutes or so. In fact some of the prepacked fish I buy has a sticky label on telling me it might smell when first opening.

"drain it in my bin"....I'd probably drained it down the sink drain (clue in the name), washed it in cold running water and then tried it again a bit later.
Didn't store it in a warm cupboard after purchase, did you?

I find some fish have a really 'fishy fish' smell to it & others don't. I tend to wash my fish in cold running water, put it in a dish & salt it on top, turn it over & sprinkle salt there too, if it's really smelly, I also add a few splashes of malt vinegar. Let it sit for 20-30 mins, wash again in cold water, rinse, dry with paper towel if you wish and viola! it's perfect......no fishy fish smell
