Watched James Martin make the above using croissants, and the custard part had three large bars of white chocolate and a load of whiskey in it.
Can’t decide if it sounds absolutely wonderful...or totally sickly. What do you think??
I’ve not made one for ages, might give it a bash next time.
Ha ha Tilly :)
He said it’s on his restaurant menu and he waits till his customers have eaten and enjoyed it before he tells them how many calories are in it.
I think that’s how it originated wasn’t it Maggie, using up stale bread.
I used to make it quite a lot, one version is to spread the bread with butter and marmalade, and sprinkle dried mixed peel and Demerara sugar over the top. It’s really nice.
Seems like another traditional British pud gentrified and not for the better. My nan used to make it with eggs, milk, stale bread and butter with a sprinkling of white sugar.. I have used brioche, no butter but spread with raspberry jam and the eggs mixed with half milk half single cream. No sugar is needed, and it was nice.
Bread and butter pudding was a favourite at the drop in...particularly when made with hot cross buns and marmalade or raspberry jam.
I also made savoury versions with ham and cheese plus spare veg.
If you do the savoury one, leave the raisins out... ;)
Just realised I forgot to add that the James Martin sounds too sickly. Maybe just 1 bar of white chocolate and a splash of whiskey.
Or Bailey's
Or Amarretto
;))
He always seems to use loads of butter and white sugar in his recipes, he also looks like he is battling the bulge with those tight waistcoats he wears. Not surprised.
Did you see it today Smurf? The gigantic mixed grill??
He used loads of meaty things, enough to feed an army almost but if you portion it up, everyone would have had a giant pork chop, a thick lamb chop, a fat sausage, a large piece of rump steak, and some kidney.
There’s no way I could enjoy all that on one plate, well, maybe the half tomato and some of the peppercorn sauce he made.
