Fish & Chips, Anyone?

A smallish portion of haddock, nine chips, a small portion of pease pudding (described as "tasteless" by the reviewer), a small portion of curry sauce ("watery") and a small portion of tartare sauce ("didn't have a huge amount of flavour"). 

No bread and butter. 

No cuppa. 

No dessert. 

ONLY THIRTY-SEVEN QUID!

Clearly a bargain!

I would have preferrd mushy peas to pease pudding (although I am rather partial to the latter).

And to me, curry sauce with fish and chips is a no-no.

I agree the fish didn't look all that great, and was certainly a small proportion if I'm paying £37 for it. 

Tartare sauce must have a strong flavour with some bite in it - that didn't seem to be the case here.

I liked the look of the chips, but a few more would have been a better deal.

So I don't think Harrods will be seeing me in their restaurant any time soon, in spite of the perfect batter.

I can't stand either mushy peas or pease pudding but I regard curry sauce as absolutely essential with fish and chips!  (I'm ambivalent about tartare sauce though.  If I'm offered it, I'll pobably decline but if I've got it, I might just dip a chip or two into it).

I won't be rushing to Harrods any time soon either!

No thanks.  The only times I eat battered  fish and chips is from a chippie at the seaside or the chippie from the Black Country Living Museum where they cook them properly in dripping.

If I were dining at a celebrity or upmarket restaurant I would order something I never have at home.

I've just checked the Harrods cafe menu and it would cost over £30 for a very small cooked breakfast and a cup of tea.

It's not value for money but is it a rip off? I expect their customers are aware of the prices and are prepared to pay.  Keeps the likes of me out

I wouldn't object to posh restaurants charging high prices, Barry, if the food was actually any better than at cheaper places. 

Often though, it's cheaper places that are actually the best.  (For example, the best Indian restaurant in East Anglia is also one of the cheapest).

I agree with that, the best fish and chips I ever had was from a back street chippy in Dartmouth, well away from the seafront.  A fisherman told us to go there, we wouldn't have found it otherwise

yeah, well, it pays not to believe every influencer you hear. By all means count the chips but once you start criticising the taste of the food you're into pure opinion.

I can get awesome fish and chips for under 20 bucks, plus I can't eat all that's served.

Nah! For a start, fish and chips means Cod & Chips, not haddock! The only thing that should be added is vinegar and salt, in that order. But 37 quid? Not on your nellie! The best chippy in the universe is Tommy's Chippy, here in Middleton. 9 quid for large cod and chips. I promise, the best you'll ever have!

In my experience the best fish and chips are found at the seaside where the chips are cooked in beef dripping and the batter isn't gluten-free.

I dont think that I would come away from that joint feeling bloated, but it looked a reasonable meal from a high class establishment.

We have a chippy down here in Devon that always wins awards for its fish and chips but for me the best I have ever had was at Murgatroyds in Yeadon, near Leeds aiport.

I've never eaten in a 'posh' place as I know you only get very small portions. You are just paying for the name.
