When my children were little they used to make these - so easy. I don't think any of us really liked them but it got them in to cooking and baking.  They used to use left over pastry, too, rolling dried fruit in to it and baking as slices.

I love rock cakes but you rarely see them in bakeries anymore, I'd buy one if I could. My first mother-inlaw used to make them all the time but used chocolate chips instead of dried fruits, they were outstanding.

I don't think I ever did. Had raspberry buns as a kid which were a bit similar but jam instead of fruit.

Get your baking tray out, Prudie.  They must be the easiest form of cake to bake.

This type of raspberry bun?  I've never tried one.  Rasp Buns - Baking with Granny

I occasionally make rock buns. Add dried cranberries as well as currants/sultanas.  Family love them.

You're probably a better baker than my children were, Maggie.

Cranberries weren't invented back then

Question Author

Thanks, Dave.  Haven't had one of those either

My mother used to make coconut Madeleines, something I haven't had for many years

I used to love rock cakes and you are right when you say you rarely see them

Lost out to muffins and cupcakes

I think I may make them tomorrow but will have to replace the traditional fruit for tropical as that is what is in the cupboard

barry1010 - I'm not a baker by any stretch of the imagination! Bought dried cranberries for a Weetabix Loaf and didn't want to waste what was left so just threw them into the rock buns.

I use to love a rock bun. Made lots when children were smaller. So easy. You could try lots of variations with fruit. Apple & sultana would be nice..

My last batch of scone would probably qualify!  For some odd reason even though I'm generally a good baker I can't make consistantly good scones!

Scones can be tricky.  The best I had were enormous scones in a tea room in Widdecombe in the Moor

My Dad used to say my Mum's rock cakes were rock by name, rock by nature 😂 however she did make delicious Welsh cakes cooked on a bake stone

Question Author

Poor mum 😂

Don't remember having rock cakes, but do remember having bread pudding made from stale bread.

Question Author

Now you're talking! Nice hot with custard and cold with a cuppa.

If your thinking the same as me yes, today some think you are talking about bread and butter pudding. I'm on about the solid cake like, you could also buy it sometimes as it was a way for the bakeries to use up the bread left over each day that they didn't sell??
