pie mash ' liquor & eels

Do these pie and mash shops exist outside London?The dish consists of a mince pie ,basic mash,and a parsley sauce ,[cooked with the eel juice I think],as an option you also have stewed eels.These are cut into 1'' pieces and float in the liquor.It should be served with plenty of salt 'pepper and vinigar,[the one I used to go to in Earlsfield South London , used to put small chillies in the vinigar,,sadly this resteraunt is now closed down,although not too far away there is a very old established one in Tooting Broadway..You probably think the whole thing sounds disscusting,but I can assure you it tastes delicious!

Scarecrow. I was looking for recipies for Pie & Mash liquor and came across this site.
My Grandparents used to run Youngs pie and mash shop in Earlsfield; Bert and Anne. I only have vague recollections of the shop, the popularity of it, the pie and mash of course and the barrels of live eels out the back. It brought back some good memories looking here.
There is a family recipe for the liquor somewhere but I will have to do some more searching....

Anne married Bert Young,Pop Orrer helped them set the shop up in Garrett lane,that's how it was allways known untill it shut down in the 1980's or early 90's..........

Anne married Bert Orrow, Annes father (my great grandfather) was Dutch and his name was Young, although this was his anglicised name due to not wanting a German sounding name after the war, I believe?

In reaction to Scarecrows comments, I am the eldest grandaughter of Bert and Ann Orrow who ran Youngs Eel and Pie House in Garrett Lane, Earlsfield.
It closed in 1976/77, because my dad & uncle already had their respective careers neither wanted to take it on as a going concern.

I have many happy memories of time spent in the shop at weekends and school holidays, and can honestly say that I still miss it now and have never tasted anything like it since!
One of my little 'jobs' was to fill up the soft drinks rack with Pepsi, Cresta and Zing!!!

Bert died in Decmber 1986 and Ann in 1998, they have left a huge gap in our family and are in our thoughts daily.

I remember Scarecrows Nan Mabel, she was a lovely lady and very much part of the family; she accompanied us on many outings to Worthing.

Very happy days.

When i was a kid in the 60's there were two pie'n'mash shops in garratt lane Berts
Nr st andrews church/waynefleet st and one that closed in the 60's was down by swaffield road nr the childrens home dont know if that was Youngs tho

The one I remember in Earlsfield was called Ben's. Is this the same one? I used to go there as a kid but probably closed down before the 1980's?

Pie & Mash shops were and are rather unknown in Holland although, untill WOII, the Dutch delivered fresh eel to the Billingsgate fish market on Lower Thames Street. On one of their trips, about 1894, John Young travelled as a twelf year young boy to London and moved in 1938 his Pie Shop from Coldharbourlane, Brixton, to Penwith Road in Earlsfield. After the bombings of 1941 he set up the Pie Shop at Garratt Lane.
John Young was the eldest brother of my grandfather.
