What are the differences between baking soda and bicarbonate of soda?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I'm sure that there is a difference, otherwise why do recipes clearly state Baking powder or Bicarb Soda ( Baking Soda) - I have one of each in my cupboard each with different ingredients on the labels. Bicarb is also four times stronger than Baking Powder. one is acid the other is alkali.
