What are the differences between baking soda and bicarbonate of soda?

They are both sodium bicarbonate (or sodium hydrogen carbonate as the chemist purist would have us say) aka NaHCO3
I'm sure that there is a difference, otherwise why do recipes clearly state Baking powder or Bicarb Soda ( Baking Soda) - I have one of each in my cupboard each with different ingredients on the labels. Bicarb is also four times stronger than Baking Powder. one is acid the other is alkali. http://www.joyofbaking.com/bakingsoda.html
