Hi. Has anyone got a good method to make the perfect jacket potato, which has a fluffy inside and a nice tasty skin? Not sure how long to put it in the oven for and what temp (electic oven)

Thanks in advance

I wash the potato, then wihlst it is still wet I pour on salt. Stick it in pre heated oven GM8-9 for around an hour for average size or hour and 15 for large. When ready give it a whack on worktop. Inside should be fluffy and outside lovely and crisp....although salt not to health, but hey who cares. The quality of the spud in the first place can hinder the above.
Oops sorry, just seen you have an electric oven, there should be a convertor online somewhere, but if its a fan oven the times could be out a few minutes, probably a bit less than I've put.
For a large potato..wash and dry ..prick all over with a fork ..rub well with oil and a little salt.
Place directly onto the oven shelf. in the middle. I cook them in an electric fan oven for an hour to one hour fifteen minutes on 140C.Turn them round halfway through so the skins crisp up evenly.

if you put them in the microwave for about 5 mins first, it will halve the oven cooking time.

my mum pricks them all over with a fork and wraps them in paper towel in the micro too

That's fab thank you

Hi scoobysoo, First thing is to buy the right sort of potato, they are getting a bit gluey at this time of year but the supermarkets usually print on the side of the bag what they are best used for. You want the 'floury' type, Maris Piper is as good as any. Select even sized potatoes, was and dry, either make a shallow cut round the potato or prick the skin surface. Lightly oil potato surface and place on a bed of rock salt. I would set your oven at 200'c and cook evenly on both sides and test by penetrating the surface with a needle. When cooked, hold with a dry cloth and gently squeeze all over until soft. This should give you that floury and fluffy inside.

If you want to shortcut all that. Carry out all the preparations and then place potato(es) in a microwave for about five minutes, turn over and cook for another five minutes and then continue on with method on a bed of salt in your electric oven to crisp up finish.

Try sticking a skewer through ,length wise. It helps cook the inside.
rub olive oil on the skin, the rub some sea salt on the skin, and put direct on to the shelf in your oven... it tastes really nice
Find someone with a coal fire and put it in foil and pop in in the ash pan for about a couple of hours, yum yum.
