I'm only 20 so I'm not talking forever ago, but in primary school, there were two cakes I was particularly fond of.

The first, being a date slice. Chocolate on the top, cornflakes, dates and other bits underneath.

The second, a cornflake tart. Pastry on the bottom, covered in jam, then cornflakes in the most lovely, syrupy type stuff on the top.

Just fantastic.... would love to make them again myself if anybody has recipes.

Hi amyjayne.

I was a school cook and used to make the cornflake tart.

Basically it is just like you say, a layer of jam on a cooked pasty case, and topped with melted golden syrup and margarine/butter and sugar, then add the cornflakes. Then leave to set. Would suggest equal quantities, ie 2oz, marg/syrup/sugar and 4oz cornflakes, but try it.

I also did a date recipes but it didn't have chocolate in it.

Can I have the date recipe please. many thanks

This is the Date recipe

Makes enough to go into a tray about 10'' x 6''

6 oz marg

2oz golden syrup

4oz plain flour

4 oz rolled oats

2oz cooking dates

lemon juice

10 fl oz water

1-2 oz cornflour

Cook dates in water when soft, thicken with cornflour add lemon juice.

Melt marg, syrup and add the dry ingrediants. Spread half the mix in a greased tin, add the date mix, spread out and then cover with the rest of the date mix. Cook Gas 4 about 20 mins, don't over cook and it tastes better when warm, not hot.

Hope you enjoy it, let me know.
