Someone gave me a box of plums from their garden. I had eaten quite a few of them and they were very sweet. Because there were so many I decided to stew some. I added a little sugar, but when they were done they were so bitter. Why did they go like that and is there anything I can do to them to rescue them?

It's the skin that makes them taste bitter .Try adding the juice of a sweet orange.

Thanx for that shaneystar2. So do you mean that before stewing them you have to get all the skin off? That seems a bit fiddly. But I'll try the orange juice on these ones.
As they stew down pick the skins out ....they will loosen away from the flesh..a spoonful of clear honey is good too and will make them nice and sweet and gooey !
