When you buy frozen meat from the supermarket is it as good as fresh? I have to cut down my spending and one area is food shopping. It's so much cheaper than fresh and was wondering why?

I think it's to do with the costs of transport etc - fresh meat has a much shorter life span so needs to be delivered straight away etc. I think very cheap frozen food can be worse quality, but generally I think it's ok. I have found a difference in lamb and sometimes chicken, but if you buy ok quality you shouldn't notice too much.
No, it isn't.

I say that on 2 grounds: 1/ I just don't think it is as nice to eat, 2/ I used to work in the meat industry, and only the very top quality stuff went fresh, slightly below that went frozen.

Though as libby says, a lot of the difference in cost is due to it being easier to transport & store.
Fresh meat is better quality, tastier and better for you than Frozen meat.

I'd urge you to stay with fresh meat. If you need to economise then there's loads of options other than buying frozen meat. for instance:-

1. Buy chicken thighs instead of breast. They're cheaper and tastier.
2. Make chillies, stews or spag bol from scratch. Dead cheap, and you can freeze the excess
3. Pork is always cheap.
4. Use neck of lamb, a cheap cut. Make kebabs with it.
5. Lamb shanks are well cheap as well I simmer them in a broth made with water/vegetable stock/carrots/onions/tomato puree. Serve with the broth. You should have loads of broth left. It's delicious the next day re-heated with a few lentils thrown in to make a rich, hearty soup.
oh and frozen salmon and tuna steaks are pretty grim too! Very rubbery! But if you like fish, frozen white fish is ok. I often keep frozen plaice fillets in the freezer as they taste lovely, defrost quickly and cook easily. Frozen prawns are good too...but I avoid the meat. Its a bit weird...
I don't have a problem with Frozen Salmon, think it adds a little bit to it, makes it a bit firmer.
